To start Final Fantasy XI you create a character. You choose one of the five races (Mithra, Hume, Elvaan, Galka or Tarutaru), one of six beginners occupations and one out of three nations (Bastok, Windurst or San d’Oria).

Although there is no defined goal in Final Fantasy XI there are several things to have fun with and different ways to level your character: You can research the past and the present of Vana’diel by taking on different missions and quests, you can focus on creating items or compete in the sport PvP games in Ballista and Brenner against other players.

It is also possible to form a group with other players so you can level and take on quests more effectively. What makes this game special is that unlike other online role playing games you maximize the level of all 18 professions. The game currency throughout all activities is Gil.
